About this site
Who this site is for, how we check legal information and how the site is funded.
Winding Down Guide is a website for owners and boards winding down a larger company. We publish guides on notices, final pay, creditor routes and records to help them organize the work, identify questions for their advisers and keep track of what still needs doing.
The site is written for owners, managers and board members of companies with employees, and for the people helping them. Data licensing referrals help fund the site, but a company that is not referred should still find useful steps here.
What you will find here
Start with the wind-down plan for the overall sequence. The guides expand individual topics, from WARN Act notices and final paycheck laws to assignment for the benefit of creditors and what happens to a closed company’s records, covered in selling company data after closing.
We aim to make the next action clear. A guide should distinguish a planning step from a filing or notice. Where the answer depends on the company or jurisdiction, we identify the review needed rather than inventing a universal rule.
How we check information
Legal, tax and employment claims are checked against official sources. Pages identify the sources used and carry an update date. A dated page is a record of the review at that time, rather than a promise that an agency or legislature will leave the rules unchanged.
We do not invent customer stories, approval rates or payout examples. Illustrations are labeled as examples. We publish no payout figures and promise no result.
How the site is funded
We refer companies whose records may qualify to an AI data buyer through a referral link.
The buyer pays us a referral fee only after a company we refer has its data transferred and approved.
The potential fee gives us a financial interest in approved referrals. Our disclosure explains that relationship. A checker result is only an initial fit assessment; it does not establish approval, value or signing authority.
Our other guides
Winding Down Guide is published by Ingenious Digital LLC, which also publishes these guides:
- Closing Business Checklist (closingbusinesschecklist.com): the checklist for closing a business, in order.
- Data Value Talk (datavaluetalk.com): what a company’s data is worth to AI buyers.
- How to Sell Data (howtoselldata.org): a handbook on selling company data to AI buyers.
Each guide covers its own topics and has its own disclosure and privacy pages.
Next steps
Use the plan to choose the task you need to address, and keep your advisers involved in company-specific decisions. Before using the records checker, read our privacy page for what it collects and where answers are stored.
